Installation Stuck - Install Visual Studio Templates

http://forum.strataframe.net/Topic16982.aspx

I've tried several times to install the product, and each time it gets to the Install Visual Studio Templates point, and just stays there. Last night I started the installation before I left for home, and logged back in 4 hours later. It was still at the same point. Any ideas?

Hi John,

I believe the installation will create a log file but I am not sure about this.  In the mean time, could you please provide more detail infomation like:

  • What OS version are you running?
  • What Visual Studio version are you running?
  • Which drive letter are you installing SF to?

What OS version are you running?  - Windows XP svc pk 2

What Visual Studio version are you running?  - VS 2005, but have VS 2003 installed as well. Also have .Net framework up to 3.5

Which drive letter are you installing SF to? - C: - just using defaults

OK, a couple of things.  This process should not take more than a couple minutes and can happen for a multitude of reasons.  Permissions on the local machine is a common reason.  it is best to have administrative permissions while installing SF.  But other factors can come into play as well such as issues with a VS 2005 install (which SV 2003 should not affect, but it has been a really long time since I have run into someone with VS2003 on the machine, but this should not really be a factor).

Secondly, load the 1.6.6 beta.  Don't let the beta word scare you.  We have actually been deplying this version of the framework into the field with our medical app...so clearly we trust it.  You can get it here: http://forum.strataframe.net/FindPost16782.aspx .

This will at least put us on the same playing field when trying to diagnose your installation problems.

I did download the new version from the link you included, but still had the same problem. I have administrator permissions on my box, so I don't think that is an issue.

John, do you have a machine that doesn't have VS2003 on it or have you tried to load on another machine.  The 2003 shouldn't be a problem, but this is the one element that is no longer part of our automated test as we do not have VS2003 loaded as it was never a supported version for StrataFrame.

If you could try to load on another machine just to see if it resolves the problem that would be great.  If you can't get it working we can do something so that I can see what is going on.

I was able to load it on my laptop with no problem.

My laptop only has Studio 2005 on it presently, however my intent is to load 2008 soon. Will I need to reload Stratframe then?

You will want to load it again so that it will install itself in the VS2008 environment.  When you loaded SF, I am sure that you saw the option for both VS2005 and VS2008, you can install and run both versions side-by-side.  So when you load VS2008 just reload the SF install afterwards to update the VS2008 IDE.  Also, just FYI, when you install and uninstall StrataFrame, it leaves your license intact.  So if you have installed SF, and then uninstall and reload, you license information will be left alone and you will still be activated once you reload SF.
