Retrieve field description during import if already exists

If a field description already exists on a SQL column, it's "erased" during import in an DDT project, and replaced by the generic "This field was imported".

Would it be possible to retrieve the value of Description extend property it it already exists?

Here is a list of things that I miss from the DDT:
1-When click a table in the "Tables" node, a list view is showed with fields description, the Comment field is not shown, so it will be nice to have it in a textbox at the bottom of the fields listview.

2- The SyntaxEditor control used for Store Procedure Properties, Views, etc. does not have a "Right Click ContextMenu", I use a lot of Copy/Paste and constantly have to use the shortcut keyboards while expecting to see the context menu instead. Please add a Context Menu so we can Select All/Copy/Paste while modifying a Store Procedure or View.

WPF

Guys,

I think that the topic of WPF has been briefly discussed in the past. However, we are now seeing beta releases of VS2010 which should, all being well, mean that a release may be around by the end of the year, or maybe sooner for MSDN subscribers.

Many 3rd party toolsets now incorporate some WPF controls and as time moves on it is apparent that this will gather impetus and the current windows forms development will become legacy. Are Microfour moving in the WPF direction? If so, is there a timeline where we might see such controls appear in a beta. I realise that there has been much discussion of XAML and how the toolsets don't really offer good support at this time, but the latest editions of Expression and the VS2010 are great improvments over what is currently available. Above all this I like the idea of being able to offload the interface drawing to the GPU, given this advantage I have started down the road of getting my head around XAML, its a long road with lots of dead ends but this is a direction I want to go in.

Just as an interim would it be possible to use WPF controls, but introduce the Strataframe binding options into those control, like what can be done with the BBS and a current non-SF windows forms control.

I know you guys won't be left behind by this, it would just help some of us to plan our development too.

Default value for Deployment Data Wizard

When using the Database Deployment Wizard, the "Deployment Data" step have all Data Packages selected by default. In my daily work I have noticed that I always have to click the "Select None" in this step, since this is most needed when deploying data the first time, but when doing common data structure maintenance, in my case 99.9% these are not deployed.

So the request is to have all Data Package not checked by default in the Database Deployment Wizard of the DDT. See image attached.

SQL Merge Replication Support

Hi,

When a DDT package is run against a database that is published for merge replication in SQL Server, the package removes all of the indexes and triggers that were added by SQL Server when the publication was setup. Effectively this means the merge replication has to be dropped and setup again.

Is there any way indexes and triggers whose names start with "MSmerge" can be left in place instead of deleting them? This would be a major win for anyone using replicated databases as it would allow the database to be altered without having to drop and re-publish.

On a similar note, it would be useful if a uniqueidentifier column could be added to the messaging and security tables as this would allow them to be included in the merge replication. Currently, SQL Server will add it's own uniqueidentifier columns to these tables but any future DDT package will try and remove them.

Persistence Database Connection...

Virtual Machine Support

A number of our developers have installed beta versions, only to have to uninstall it and reinstall the old version. As this is time consuming, it would be much more advantageous to be able to install a beta version on a virtual machine rather than overwriting the release version. The problem of course is with licensing as virtual machines have a different MAC address than their host. We wouldn't want to have to use a license just to test a beta version. Are there any plans to support this via longer expiration date for betas or some other method to facilitate testing?

Add Property/Functionality to StrataFrame Listview

Add a property to either BO or Listview to enable Listview's selected row be in sync with BO's current dataset.

There's a user contributed example on how to subclass a listview to add that functionality, but i see no reason for not implementing that into stataframe natively.

It's something a user really expects, when working with a list of datasets.

Could be a property like "SyncSelectionWithBO" or "SyncAttachedListviewSelection" or whatever :)

Also a strataframe version of the datagrid would be really appreciated :)

please add column collation to DDT

I have a project that integrates with software whose backend is on SQL Server 2000 and where the database default collation type is Latin1_General_BIN. I created a new database with the standard collation type of SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. When I try to join tables across database with a foreign key in my database I get an error like "Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "Latin1_General_BIN" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" in the equal to operation."

I figured out that I can change the collation type for columns in the database to avoid this problem. Unfortunately DDT doesn't apply this setting when deploying a DDT package.

Any chance you could add the ability for DDT store this setting and apply it when deploying to a new database?

Enhancement to the SyntaxEditorControl

Sorry to put this here, but the DDT is really where I want this to happen. The ability of the control to support either/both of the following.

1. Undo. - many times have I stamped over a sproc, only to swear at not being able to undo.

2. Full right-click clipboard context menu support. I know you support the keystrokes for copy, paste etc but the context menu would be nice.

Strataframe Inherited UI - Update Request

I realise that this is not likely to be too far up the importance list, but I figured it's worth mentioning. DevExpress have added a set of really slick looking gauge controls to their latest release, 8.2.1.

Any chance of them getting 'Strataframed' and the ability to bind to them being added?

Report Documenting Table Structures

Is there already a reporting function in DDT to print out the table structures etc? Or is there such an ability built into SQL Server 2005 someplace?

Just realized I have all kinds of documenting tools for my DBCs in VFP but don't know (or have forgotten) how to go about this in DDT/SQL

( If none of this is already there, consider reporting an ER for the DDT)

Chaps,

When you create a new table, I usually create the procs I need to go along with it before I deploy. Resultantly, when creating the sproc, I can't refer to the table. If I have deployed the table to SServer then there is no issue, what would be really great would be a kind of 'SQL Prompt' for Strataframe DDT so you can get intellisense for your tables and columns.

I realise to encorporate something like SQL Prompt is not an overnight addition, however a list of tables, with their associated columns would be really useful.

I guess that the easiest alternative to this would be to remove the modality from the stored procedure properties window. :)

DDT Enhancement Request

I have one request to make it easier to manage our release process.

Right now just before we create a new build I create a new DDT Profile for the specific build... I then create a package file from our production profile and then import the tables I want to include with the build. (I may have a number of tables that I don't want to release yet.)

The problem with this is that the 'Deployment Data' and 'Object Name History' isn't part of the import so I have to manually recreate the deployment data, which isn't too bad when you have a few of them, but over the past few months it has grown quite a bit.

I requesting the ability to copy an entire profile to a new profile name... or provide the ability to include the deployment data and object history when you import from an existing package file.

DDT Deployment - Error - Enhancement

Hi,

one of the things I have been quite annoyed over the time is the fact that the DDT does not tell me which procedure was involved when there was an error during the deployment of a stored procedure.

I can then only guess by the Sql Exception.

It would be great, if you could include that information in the "Deployment Progress" window.

3 DDT Update Requests

Hi Folks

3 things that I find slow me down when using the DDT are

I always create all 3 sprocs. Having it remember that I want all 3 would be excellent
The default stored procedure names are not the ones we use is our standards. Yours are always TABLE_NAME_Insert where ours is table_name_ins (our table names are always capitalized but our sprocs are not). It would rock to be able to setup our own template for this
It always defaults to Optimistic All Fields for update and Off for delete but I always use RowVersion for both.

Obviously non of this is a big deal and is just really boring leg work but the whole point of using products like SF is to save me time and make my code consistent.

Setting Table Properties

Maybe I'm missing something...but...I'm setting up a new table. If I haven't set the table structure yet, how can I set the concurrency to "Optimistic Row Version" as it requires a version field?

Would it be possible to add that to the row setup dialog - where there would be a checkbox that says something like "Use this field for optimistic row version?" Maybe over there where the "Primary Key" and "Allow Null" are...

If you could please consider the followings when editing/adding table columns

a) In data type size, could you allow to delete the zero with keyboard "delete" key, rather trying to grab it with mouse and delete it? I also noticed a bug too. By default it shows 10 for VarChar, but I need to put 40 in there. Since it doesn't let me delete the 1 and zero, I typed 40, which became 4010. But now, it won't allow me to delete the last 1 and zero. It keeps going to 4010.

b) For the "Save" button, could you allow CTRL+S to save?

Field/column type in DDT

It would be a great help if in another screen, we can create a list of "Field/column Types" with their name, data type, size and picture(mask). i.e., SS#, Address, Phone # and etc.

Then when creating table structure, we would have a drop down for "field type" and we could select/point to any of of those predefined types. It's important that DDT, "Points" to the other lookup table rather copy that into this table. This way, if I want to change my address from 30 Char to 40, I'd change that in field type table and do full rebuild of my BOs and redeploy the files. But at least, I don't have to go to every address and change the size.

What do you think guys?

Table columns listing

When you click on a table, DDT displays the list columns on the right side pane. Currently it show, Field name, Description, Type, Size and date created.

I'd like to suggest to add "Allow null" property to show as well. This way, I can check all the columns to make sure I did not miss any, rather clicking one at the time.

Using last entry as default when creating columns

Working on DDT, when creating columns for a table, it would be nice to use the last entry's "data type" and "Size" as the default for the new entry as oppose to "VarChar" and "10". Lots of times, I group columns that are similar in nature, and makes easier when creating large tables from scratch!

Enhancement Ideas

Hello all,

When playing with different schemas, for example I have imported an existing database of 540 tables, defined the field descriptions (ok a lot but not all of them!), I wanted to copy the "master" to a copy so I could add items such as Security to test.

I have a couple enhancement ideas for the DDT:

1. Add a Remove Profile option (after done playing with schema, remove DDT Profile)
2. Add a Copy Profile option (copy a master profile to a test profile)
3. Give access to the Messaging, Localization and Security tables (Supply SQL Scripts for 2000 and 2005) so this way if I want to add them to ANY database that might not be in the DDT, I can run a script to create them.

Allow Save without close

It would be nice if you could save modifications to a table structure (and other objects) without closing the form. I recently ran into problems where there was a broken rule that couldn't get fixed and I lost the entire table structure (I was just creating it). If I could have saved as I went, I would have lost one column.

Object Mapper and Custom Field Descriptions

In the Object Browser, it would be excellent to have the option to set the Description of a field. The only way that I have found to add a customized description to a field property is to modify the Designer.vb directly. This works fine but all of your work is lost the next time the Object mapper is run. I found that I could also add custom code to every field but that is more work and I'm way lazy! :D

It would also be helpful to have a combo-box of common Null Alternatives (String.Empty, Nothing, 0, False) so it doesn't have to be typed in each time unless the value is unusual.

Constraints and Descriptions

I have two asks in the Database Deployment Toolkit:

1. I would like to be able to describe constraints in the database, for integrity purposes, which I can't do.

2. If I import a database into the DDT, I would like to have the descriptions retrieved with them. It is really tedious to have to redo the descriptions when there are perfectly adequate descriptions provided.

It would save me a lot of time if I could have the ability to also import a single table at a time. We are in a transition stage where we are not using the toolkit to deploy structures yet but I am building all the relations etc... so I find myself having to manually duplicate all new tables which can lead to many typo's and incorrect setting.
