Parse RTF or Text Control into several lines including spaces

I'm need to parse a text control or Rtf control into several lines. I plan populate an OBX segment for transcriptions. I have the code for building the actual HL7 message. Just need some help on the parsing logic.

Saving big text files in a Varchar Max field?

Hi guys,

I am currently saving big text files (450,000+ lines) in a Varchar(Max) field, for a while the performance of getting a record with such data decreased and it is noticeable in the browser dialogs and reports.

I am wonder is there is a better way to deal with so much data in a single field, so would it be possible to kind of compress the data in the field somehow?

I know that I may have this field in another table to separate it from the main table and do some magic to make it look as part of the record in the form, but if that is no the best way I am open to any suggestions.

Please keep in mind that currently I am showing the data in the form in a readonly textbox, but I can change the design to not show it up when the form loads and put a button so the user can get the data and then show it, but at least that will not slow down the browser dialog.

Sun Virtual Box even runs on USB drive

A few weeks ago I started experimenting and using Sun Virtual Box. I wanted to let others know about it.

It is free, very easy to use and supports Windows products, Linux and Mac. It is more user-friendly than VMWare Workstation.

I've been running virtual machines on my Vista laptop for Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu (just for the heck of it) and I plan on installing more Virtual Boxes down the road (Windows 2008 Server, etc).

I used to use VMWare Workstation but uninstalled it. I couldn't see any advantage and Sun Virtual Box being free suited my budget more.;)

For a developer it is VERY useful to have it for testing purposes and to save money on equipment, etc.

Extended Period of Limited Activity

Happy New Year!

Now that the holidays are over, I happened to notice that there has been a prolonged lull in forum activity over the last month or so. It could be my imagination or perhaps I am not seeing the conversations as they are happening. I usually try to keep up with the new posts but there just are not that many. Is this a natural lull, or are things cooling down in the StrataFrame stratosphere?

Wheres the best place to put common methods

I am uisng c# as main language

I am starting to build up a lot of common methods that will be used across Buisness Objects. e.g. Validating Lookups, Picking out descriptions etc. that will typically need to go out to Database Tables (rather than access internal Buisness Objects)

I have to decide where to put this code....do I just put then all into a common .CS file, Do I create a .DLL separate project... wondering what is the best pracrise here.

Report Sharp-Shooter slow preview process

Hi, I know this is a RSS issue, but since many SF developers use RSS I will throw it here anyway :hehe:

I have this report which is taking about 15-24 seconds to show in my custom preview form, the preview form will show up blank with the "No Report" label (see image RSS slow loading), then the report will be shown normally.

I know that the data is coming out in less than a second, and the preview form is shown without the report, I have not found a way to display a message to the user letting him/her know that the report is being process. The code to generate the report is splitted in two classes:

Changing controls to Base Classes

Is it possible to change classes easily on exisitng forms. I have a no. of forms set up with SF classes and now want to change these forms to use my own base classes.

Now that I feel comfortable with my Base Classes, I want to go back over any forms that have been done and change the class the controls are based on.

(e.g. for TextBoxes, ChkBoxes,Tabs etc). IN VFP, I used to do this by going behind the scenes and editing the .scx file...just wondering if there is something similar in VS.

Hi,

So much to know.....

While investigating ways and means of speeding up our app (especially on initial load of forms) we have stumbled across NGen. It seems like it is something we should be using and an early test shows it could half the load time for complex forms (BTW we use DevExpress controls).

We have a way to go in looking at the pros (apparently many) and cons (can't find any of significance yet) and I was wondering if anyone has had a bad experience with NGen and can perhaps warn us of potholes before we fall down them.

Configure VPN for SQL Server 2005-2008

I read in some post here in SF that is posible use a VPN for connecting to SQL Server.

I actually have LogMeIn for conneting remotly to my computer, but I want to try to configure a VPN for connect from my laptop to a home computer to run a SF application that I have in both, the home computer has a SQL Server 2008 databases that I wish to connect to the database in the home computer using a VPN.

So the question is How to configure a VPN for do this task?

Please, as much detail as you can? I really don't have any idea of how to do this. All what I can do is with LogMeIn using a simple Access database file, which I can share so it's easy to connect to that file. But my main application has a lot of features including SF security that can not put in the Access file.

Single Instance Application...

When using Strataframe the required Startup Object is AppMain to that the database connections for the Business Objects can be established, and with that, you can't use the Visual Studio Option of Single Instance Application in the Application Properties. So I was wondering what was the best way of handling this manually.

I spent a few minutes reading through some ways people have done this online, but it seems to boil down to searching through the processes and finding one that matches your form's Title or something such. I ended writing a quick method that searches on the type of the form in the AppMain's InitApplication method.

Is this the best way to handle this ? Also this doesn't currently allow the same application to be run by multiple users on the same system, ie users over Terminal Services etc. I guess I would have to add another quick check for if the Owner of that Process is the current Application's process owner or some such.

I was just wanting to get some input from anyone who may have had to do this as well.

Is there already a good utility or tool (or chunk of code I could steal ) that would allow for listing all the controls on a form, their databinding, type, tooltip (not a biggie)

I was thinking of extracting it from form's code itself, but I thought someone may have already done this and written code to do so??

( actually, this could be done with LINQ against the text of the form designer file ... hmmm ) :cool:

How to setup EditorAttribute to UITypeEditor in another file?

I've written a UITypeEditor and it works when the editor lives in the same assembly (or one of the referenced assemblies) as the types using it. Then I can use something like:

However, I'd like to move this to a separate assembly, one that is not referenced by the assemblies with types that use it, because I don't want to have to distribute the code that is solely to for the VS designer. I know this can be done, as SF does this quite nicely. I've attempted to figure out how it was done (looked at SF code) and then I tried this:

How to set parent of component to parent form at design time

I'm trying to get a component to set a ParentForm property at design time and have it serialized. I think you are doing something like this with the ParentContainer property when you implement the IInitOnFormLoad interface, but I'm not figuring it out.

First, is this entirely handled via that property? It appears to be setting the value of the property, when in design mode, but what calls the property in design mode to begin with?

Second, what causes the value to be serialized? In the setter, the component is added to the list of objects that need to be initialized. Is there something special that needs to happen to get it serialized? I'm using C# if that makes difference or requires some extra step.

Backup Software

Hi All,

Here is some feedback of the backup software that I am using:

My database size is about 1TB. For me a good backup is a matter of life and death situation. I decided after several months of testing to use the LightSpeed from the Quest company found at:[url] http://www.quest.com/litespeed-for-sql-server[/url]. I tried also RedGate and was not impressed with that software. It does not have the flexibility LightSpeed provides.

LightSpeed is being used by MicroSoft for their own database, I actually spoke with one of their DBAs and while I was telling him that I am looking for a backup software he told me about it. Quest provides 24/7 tech support and one time on Saturday I called them when the Trial version expired and needed to restore a table. They dispatched a tech guy from his home that called me and took care of the problem.

I got the enterprise version since It can restore one table at the time as well, so no need to restore the whole database if one table is needed. It has many stored procedures that I can run via the ms sql 2008 and see the status of the restore or backup.

They also provided with a demo to me and Edhy about what you can do with their backup software. Because of the economy situation they were able to provide an aggressive discount. If you need to get some info here is the sales rep that helped me to nail the deal:

CLR Stored Procedures

Hi,
Can anybody recommend a good book or any other source about creating complex clr stored procedures?

I have a calculation process that I was doing at the client level and due to the large amount of records that needs to be used for lookups (couple of millions) I have to move this process to a Store Procedure.

The process requires some data loops for validations, currently I am taking advantage of the SF BO functionality to Filter and Seek, but I believe in a CLR SP I would not have a BO so I may be working with a data reader object to do the looping and validations.

I will appreciate any information related to managing the data in the CLR SP. I already have a Database Project and a CLR SP created and have done some testing, but need more advance data manipulation samples in order to translate my code in the form into the CLR SP.

Report SharpShooter and Receipt Printers....

Hi guys,

I have the need to generate 40 columns receipts using standard Receipt Printers like the Star SP200 or the Epson series. Have you guys used Report SharpShooter (RSS) with these kind of printer? if so how would you control the receipt's length so when the receipt finish printing it will only eject a couple of line to cut the paper?

In my case, I use the "Generic Text" print driver since I don't have any special needs for using a custom driver yet.

Windows 7 - Problem running SF application

How to only build the Start-Up Project

It used to be that when I set a project to be the 'start-up project' in VS and clicked run then that project and all its depedancies where rebuilt but now my entire solution is rebuilt.

I've no idea what I've modified to cause this behaviour change but I would sure love to set it back to how it was. Any ideas?

Hi Trent,

First, I know this could be a long topic and as such, I would ask you to take your time responding and also I know this is not directly related to SF, but you have done great things with RSS and I hope you can share some tricks with us.

I got to a point in Report Sharp Shooter (RSS) where I find myself doing many repetitive things per report and probably I am missing something in how to properly take advantage of RSS to handle many reports.

Up to now I have been doing one or two reports per form and I do the following:
- Add a ReportManager control, BBS for my reports and add my reports (using InlineReports). So far I have a Master Report which I use with all reports, so at least I don't have to do that all the time.
- For each report I have to create the following classes:
ReportDataSource.vb
ReportBBS.vb
ReportBO.vb
Of course using the SF Custom BBS wizard, these steps are easy, and I follow the same class patter used in StrataFlix.

Now I want to create a Report Center form to manage and allow End User to run reports, but don't know how would I handle the following:
- Sync my report manager table with data to run the reports, in other words if I have several reports records, when the user select a report, how to tell the ReportManager which report to run? can this be added on the fly or should I create all reports definition in the ReportManager?

- How would I optimize the process so I can re-use and run the same report from several forms?

- RSS saves the report definition in an rst file, should this file be included in the project?

I created my own preview form which works really great with a lot of functionality I added. For now I do not allow End User to make modifications to the report, but I did manage to add the feature for me to design a report while previewing, this way with the data from the BSS it is easier to design the report layout while previewing it.

Any other tip you can offer?

Have you tried running SF with VS2008 in Windows 7?

Since I got my release copy from MS it seems like a quality OS that I might be interested in running sooner rather than later.

Which Report Writer

The criteria is Ease of use for the end user, and to be able to embed reports reasonably easily into an app.

SQL Server Event Handler

Updating the Setup and Deploy Project

I have been using Click-Once since I started with my current C# application project 2 years ago. I have lost count of how many updates I have made. Recently I have been having some unusual behavior in my IDE which given me pause to reconsider my deployment options. I am investigating deploying the SF application via Group Policy in AD.

So far, the experience with AD deployment has been a good one. Now, I want to update the setup project with the most recent changes and get the update out to the install base. This should be easy, but I am missing something.

First, if I simply build the SF app, then build the setup project, my current changes are not picked up. Version update somewhere?
Second, how do I get the new MSI to update to old MSI? I am a little confused on that one. Is it basically uninstall, then reinstall?

Any pointers on this setup project would be greatly appreciated.

Web site authentication question

My company is investigating upgrading to SharePoint 2007 from SharePoint 2003. Apparently the 2007 version now uses two web sites, one for the normal stuff and one for the "My Site". The issue is that our users are NOT logged into the domain. They are almost all remote (maybe 20 out 200 are in the office). The site uses domain authentication, thus when they access it, IE prompts them for domain credentials, and they then get on. Unfortunately, when they then choose "My Site", they have to login again, as it is a different site and apparently IE doesn't reuse the already applied authentication (which makes sense).

Does anyone know of a way for two web sites, on the same server, to share the same authentication credentials so the user only has to login once?

Report Sharp Shooter loading 300k records problem

Hi Trent,

I am having a situation with RSS and wanted to see if you or somebody else here in the forums has experienced this one before going to RSS support.

I have a report that will bring a lot of child records up to 300,000. I am using SF BBS and I have not problems generating small data reports (less than a 1,000), but with the ones over 250,000 then I simply get the RSS "No Report grey screen) and after waiting a considered period of time, nothing ever comes up.

This BBS is based on a View and the data is grabbed using a store procedure to limit the fields to be shown and expedite the generation, while debbuging I can see all the records in the BBS.Source.Count and I can even visualize them.

Now to explain why so many records, I have to import CSV files with that many records which are then sorted out against my data and the ones that fail needs to be send out back to the CSV originator, so my plan was to generate a nice PDF file with RSS.

At this point I appreciate any suggestion related to the overall process. Thanks!

Creating background image for .NET forms

Hi all,

My wife is trying to create a nice background logo to be used in my custom Login form, but for some reason, when I try to use the image as a background it display a white column on the left and not matter what I do, it will not cover all the form. I also test it with a PictureBox and got the same result.

I noticed that the StrataFlix login sample uses a custom background image (not included in the project), is there any specific rule or setting I should tell my wife about this image so it can be used on my forms? She is using Adobe illustrator to create the image.
