On my laptop, every time I install an update, the activation vanishes and I have to reactivate. This is very problematic because I am usually behind a proxy server or totally disconnected. The result is that I loose the rest of the day.

Are you unchecking the box during the install that asks if you want to activate after the install?

On the second or third screen, there is a screen with two checkboxes. One is for deploying the database, the other is to activate as part of the install. If you uncheck the "Activate After Install" box, then the installation process should not bring up the activation window.

The problem is not that the activation screen appears. The problem is that the state of the product prior to the uninstall/reinstall was {ACTIVATED}. After the uninstall/reinstall the state of the product is {NOT_ACTIVATED}.  If this state transition occurs whan I am in a location that has no internet connectivity or has an agressive proxy server, then I cannot reactivate and loose a day of potential work.

This behavior is not completely predictable. On one desktop machine, the state seems to be unaffect by uninstall/reinstall however on my laptop, it usually suffers from the symptoms that I described above.

Daniel,

When you uninstall StrataFrame, is there a "MicroFour StrataFrame License" reference still in your GAC.  To verify, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Assembly.  Scroll down to see if there is a MicroFour StrataFrame License file in the GAC.  Next, when you re-install the product, does the install ask you for the license file?  If so, then there is the problem and we need to determine at what point the file is becoming deactivated.  One potential way the laptop may have become deactivated if it is one of the computers that uses the USB network adapter dongle.  If it wasn't plugged in while in Visual Studio, the computer may have deactivated itself.  Is this a possibility?  It may have then just appeared to have manifested itself during the install process.  Sorry for all of the questions, just trying to determine what may have happened. Thanks.

I just did another reinstall. The MicroFour StrataFrame License file is in the GAC at the moment. I recall that the times when the install needs to be activated I did get a prompt to load the license file.

This time it did not ask me for the license file.

This is one of the computers that uses the USB network adapter dongle.

It is quite conecivable that I will not have the dongle installed every time that I start VS, e.g. I am working on a non-Strataframe project and I am working on a Strataframe project on another computer at the same time. It would be best if there was some protection against the computer deactivating itself.

Did an answer ever get worked out for this?

I am behind an agressive firewall and cannot activate via the internet. I do have access to the internet but it is via a proxy that requires authentication. Maybe the license application should be amended to allow users to input proxy and authentication details? I have other internet aware applications that do this.

Anyway, I managed to get activated with a manually provided file but the next time I started VS, I was deactivated!

I may have installed some devexpress components before restarting VS

What do I do now. This is a crazy situation to be in. I have to be able to use this product without the requirement for a constant internet connection.

Jason,

Just so you know, if you are behind a firewall that prevented you from activating on your own, then you could not have been deactivated.  A more likely explanation is that the network adapter on which you were activated is either disabled or not available when you went into Visual Studio.

Regardless, the release next week, on September 22, have a completely new technology and license architecture.  You can activate through a web service which will resolve your issue with the firewall.

Thanks Trent. I think you are probably right about the network adapter. All is ok now.
