I will look into this.  But for the meantime, when it asks you for a server name, just type it in and don't drop down the list and see if the install will continue.

I think it may be because of using a named instance of SQL. I had the same probelm if I did not type the full name for example Computername\InstanceName. The Browse may need to be changed to look for named instances?

The instance name is actually returned from SMO without us having to aquire each individual name.  I think the problem may relate to the process and threads.  I have not yet reproduced the problem, but I am changing all types of settings to see if I can reproduce it. 

Paul, I have seen this type of problem on named instances before as well.  Definitly a good place to look!  I do feel pretty confident that this go around is related to machine settings (or hardware) as it interacts with the threads in the process.
