Does anyone have a suggestion for a book on designing user interfaces? Looking for something with a little bit of theory but mainly the technical aspects and best practices of how to use VS to build the UI.

thanks,
Mark

I have never found a book in the past that could help in this area.  We have spent years and a lot of money, however, working through design interfaces on our medical software and have gained a phenominal amount of experience through this process.  We actually will be covering this very topic in our next training class in July as this has been a very hot topic lately.

Hi Mark,

Having been into interface design for years, and never really found utopia yet, I would not so much look into interface design as interaction design, or how your users work with your software.

An interface can be real nice to look at, but a dog to use. There are some books out there to get ideas from Seeing Data by Rebecca Riordan is an ok start. However, if you really want some brain hurting stuff do a google for some of Edward Tufte's works.

I will close with a recommendation of Alan Coopers organization, appropriately named Cooper. Alan Cooper everyone knows as the father of VB, but he is also a well known author with some excellent titles. His organization works solely in the field of interaction design and publishes a periodic emailer on the subject.

Hope this is of interest.

regards

Geoff

I don’t know if this will help but some time ago I ran into some good info on the does and don’ts of interface design under “Interface hall of shame”. Some times knowing what not to do is just as good.

hope it helps,
