I have setup a new machine, formatted the drive, installed XP Pro with all patches, installed VS2005 and the SQL Server 2005, installed DevExpress components and then started the Strataframe install.

When the installer gets to the "Building Strataframe Databases" section of the "Configuring Strataframe" dialog, an error dialog pops up titled ".NET Framework Installation Utility" that says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. The error signature is:

EventType : clr20r3     P1 : installutil.exe     P2 : 2.0.50727.42
P3 : 4333af65     P4 : microfour strataframe dbengine     P5 : 1.6.0.0
P6 : 45d3946e     P7 : 11b     P8 : 0     P9 : system.io.filenotfoundexception

I have encountered this error before which is why I went to the trouble of creating a clean environment in which to do the install.

The problem seems to be that the strataframe databases are not getting created. The default location that the SQL Server 2005 has created for databases is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data". This path is different than the one that I am familiar with from previous versions of SQL Server, but that's what the MS Setup program created when it installed the server. I have no idea if this is a factor in the error that was generated.

I really need some help figuring out what I have done wrong so that I can correct my mistakes and end up with a successful install.

Thanks in advance

The log file for the install can be found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicroFour\StrataFrame and should contain the message for the FileNotFoundException to tell us what file it is trying to locate.  It might be the *.pkg file for the DDT package, or it could be like you mentioned that it cannot create the *.mdf file for the database.

I have looked for install logs before. I've never seen one. This is a complete directory listing of the folder you directed me to:

Volume in drive C has no label.

Those last few *.log files are the ones that I was talking about, but you already posted those on your other thread.  It looks like the install could not find the *.pkg file for the data deployment.

In one of the messages I think you asked me if the install was running from a network share. The answer is yes. I had Strataframe.exe downloaded to a network share and I located it with windows explorer and double-clicked it. I did not copy it local first.

btw. the rebuild of the DevExpress stuff with 7.1.3 worked flawlessly following your directions. All of the samples now run as you intended them.

If it would help you to clarify anything I would be glad to remove it all and try another fresh install, but I won't do that unless you think it would help. Otherwise it all seems to be working and I would like to get down to actually using it.

Yeah, it looks like everything is installed and running, so I wouldn't worry about running it again.  However, I think some of the problems with the install might have come from the fact that you launched the install from your network share.  To deploy the StrataFrame and StrataFrameSample databases we use an installer classes that gets launched by an installer action by the MSI.  If the assembly containing the installer class is not in a fully trusted location (like a network share), it isn't guaranteed to run as planned.  I think that's where some of the weirdness you received during the install came from.

Thanks. I'll definitely keep that in mind and make sure I try a local install the next time I have an occasion to run the installer.

Thanks for the help

Folowup info:

I started to use the apparently successful install and, while going through step 2 of the tutorial, I noticed some wierd behavior of the dialogs such as the title area not painting and portions of the child dialogs not painting. None of this prevented the procedure from working but it was kind of distracting.

So I thought I would install on another machine. I was installing from a local copy of the setup program. I experienced the identical sequence of errors:

1 - the setup crashed while trying to create the databases

2 - nothing was written to the log file (it was 0 length)

3 - a second install choosing the repair option worked.

I've now experienced this identical sequence of behaviors on 4 different machines. Might there actually be a problem here?

Regarding the log, maybe the log entries are getting hosed during the crash before they have a chance to get written out. I've been using log4net and have noted that it's very good about writing immediately as log entries are posted.

If the video issue persists I will try to get some screen shots of it to send you.

Thanks

Yes, could you post the stuff on the drawing issues.  It could certainly be that there is a painting issue throwing an exception before the database is ever deployed (but I've never known of a painting issue throwing a FileNotFoundException Wink).  I know some of our users are experiencing painting issues with the ThemedForm on Windows 2000; for them, the non-client area is not visible (no title bar or borders).
