No, that was for illustration purposes only.  The workstation either can be left blank, explicitly defined, or used in conjunction with wildcards (i.e. Front*).

I understand you can use wildcard characters for workstations with common naming conventions, but if I do not have common naming conventions can I simply specify all the workstation names separated by commas?

I wasn't 100% sure if the example used in the documentation (FromDesk1, FrontDesk2, FronDesk3) was used to illustrate the use of wildcards or if in fact you could enter a list of workstations.
