Does anybody know of a tool that would help you optimize SQL tables (with proper indexes) for a particular query?

Well, there are a number of tools that show the execution plan. If you can learn to interpret the execution plan through SSMS you can really get a lot of good information here. But there are a number of tools out there that will give metrics and analytics showing what is broken, but I do not know of one that tells you how to change your query to an explicit value.

Thanks Trent, I will keep looking.

BTW for .NET applications I came across to this one: ANTS Performance Profiler™ from RedGate.

After looking briefly to some videos it looks like a one of those tools that are a MUST to have.

It is good and we have used it in the past. It is a good product and the price point isn't bad. For most things it works really well. However, we now use AQTime from automated QA which doesn't seem to get bogged down when running very large applications. Here is their link: http://www.automatedqa.com/products/aqtime/
