The reason that I ask is because I am an independent consultant and I often have to work on my lap top at my client site. So I really need to have the framework instlled on both my laptop and my desktop even though it is only beoing used by one developer and obviously I am not on both machines at the same time (unless I am transfering files.

You have 2 options here, the license is attached to whatever network adapter you used, so with that in mind this is what you can do:

1. Install SF in both computers and keep them in Synch with the same version.
2. Deactivate the SF license using the License Information in the StrataFrame menu or via the My Account in the SF web site.
3. Activate in the Laptop.
4. If you need to this constantly, you can buy a USB NIC adapter and use that to activate SF, then make sure the USB NIC is connected to either computer before using SF.

Trent said that the future version of SF will not depend on the SF database and that every project's metadata will be saved on XML files in the project's folder or something along those line, the question would be which version of SF he was referring to

I opted for #4 long ago and have been happy.

I also suggest a VPN for access to ONE SF database, or it got hairy for me.

Good idea, even if not VPN is available, at least hosting at the ISP will take care of that problem, but it does requires Internet access at the customer for the laptop or a WiFi.

On access to the StrataFrame database:



You only really need this if you are going to use it. It is used for localization, security and BO meta data (via BO Mapper). I have successfully done a lot of development without access to the SF database by just avoiding developing in those areas while disconnected.



I have also had trouble designing forms without a connection to the SF database....very, very slow. I didn't notice this the last time I tried it though, so that may have been fixed.

You know, that's exactly what I do, too   The further you get into your project development, the less you end up using the BOMapper; your database structures are generally the first thing created for the application and are pretty static once you get going.  So, you don't always need access to the SF design-time database.

Hrm... you got me there.  I'm not sure what would be trying to access it within the form designer.  There are actions within the control designers that use it, like the localization tie-ins and such, but nothing that would be trying to access the database without you clicking specifically on it... unless there's something trying to pull the solution preferences for the design-time theming or something.  Not sure.
